2 Months Complete

We have finished our second month of homeschooling and are now 1/4 of the way through our curriculum (at least the main core subjects).

I am amazed at what Samuel is learning so far this year.   He is learning contractions right now in Phonics/Reading and is improving his reading.  His letter formation has improved in the two months we've been doing school. (When he doesn't rush through his work, his words look really good.)   Last week in math, he learned how to add double digit numbers.  I was amazed that he learned it this early, but it involves numbers equaling 0-9.   For example: 24+63.   He has also been learning addition with numbers that equal 10-18.  He was allowed to use a number line at first, but now has to solve them without it.   He has trouble with it, so I've been teaching him how to solve the easier problems first and build off of the answers he already knows.  He has caught on to this and is steadily improving.

Last week in HSA, he had show-and-tell.  I was pretty excited that he was given the opportunity.  I remember fondly those days from elementary school and was glad that he was able to participate in it as well.  We filled out an "About Me" questionaire and he brought two stuffed animals with him as well.   His teacher also traced around him on a long piece of paper and wrote down comments from his class about characteristics they liked about him.  It was really fun to read it!

Darius is 3/4 of the way through his thick preschool book.  Once again, I underestimated how long it would take him.   I was thinking it would last him the whole year, but he likes to do several pages at a time and so we might finish it by November.  I will probably purchase the Kindergarten book (in the same series) for him to work on the rest of the year.  I'm sure it will take him longer to work through that.   (Or at least I hope it will.)

He is also doing well with pre-reading skills.  We've spent time together making different words with the same endings.  For example:  hat, cat, etc.  Today I pulled out a short vowel reader.  We worked on sounding out the words and using the pictures to determine the content.  He did very well!  I think we will work on the same book next week as well.

Overall, I think that homeschooling has been going well.  There are challenges with attitudes or a fussy little sister, but for my boys, they are learning well and succeeding.

I'm thankful for you that you've gotten into a routine and the boys are excelling! Rachel is getting better with her math just by spending less than 5 min. working on it at home. The curriculum is great! Not sure what is involved in the classroom. It's called "Mountain Math" and it works on the memorizing part of adding. She used to get frustrated with it and now she looks forward to practicing after school! I love when our kiddos are excited about learning. :)
